Can I just say it without sounding like an asshole.....I hate relay operator calls! This is when someone who is deaf/hard of hearing places a call to a relay operator, who communicates with them via TDD/TTY machine, and then tells me what they are saying, and tells the caller what I am saying. They are very rare, and I feel compassion for the people who have to use this method of communication....but it is almost always frustrating as all hell. I understand that a lot of the folks know ASL and that is why what is read to me sometimes sounds like someone from another country is speaking...BUT DAMN!
Today I get a relay call, and I groaned inwardly. Took the call, the operator asked if I knew how to do a relay call, I said yes. So then the guy says, repeat back to me what you said when you answered the phone. I did. He sits there forever and then says, "This is where I start to tell you what the caller is saying, please speak to me as if you are speaking to the caller'. Yes, yes, I know that, just get to it! So the relay operator says, "Do you taking?" and so I sat there. And I sat there. Waiting for the rest of the question. The relay operator says, "Well? Do you have a response?" I was like WTF? I said, "There is nothing to respond to." So the relay operator re-read, "Do you taking?" And I asked, "Taking what?" The relay operator scolded me, "Please speak as if you are talking to the caller and not me!" Okay forget you operator, I said, "I can't possibly frame a response to that, and I'm about to hang up, I have customers lined up in here." Operator said, "Ok hold on a minute...."
That call was over quickly, the caller wanted to sell some cowboy boots with Confederate flags on them. I couldn't say, "Try Mississippi" without being rude so I ended the call quickly.
